Herbs are a great addition to any home cook's kitchen. They add a burst of flavor to dishes, can be used fresh or dried, and offer various health benefits. But buying fresh herbs can be expensive, and often they only last for a while in the fridge. The solution? Grow your own indoor herb garden! Here's how to create a successful indoor herb garden and enjoy fresh herbs year-round.
Choose the Right Herbs
Not all herbs are created equal when it comes to indoor growing. Some herbs, like basil and parsley, do well in indoor environments. In contrast, others, like rosemary and thyme, prefer outdoor growing conditions. Choose herbs that will thrive indoors and that you know you will use, such as mint, chives, and cilantro.
RULE OF (GREEN) THUMB
Did you know you don't even have to buy seeds to grow herbs? You can take cuttings, set them in water until roots form, and then plant!
Find the Right Spot
Herbs need plenty of sunlight to grow, so choose a spot in your home with at least 6-8 hours of daylight daily. If you don't have a sunny spot, you can use grow lights to provide the necessary light. Herbs also prefer a warm and humid environment, so avoid placing them near drafty windows or air conditioning units.

Choose the Right Container
When it comes to indoor herb gardening, the container you choose is essential. Herbs need good drainage to prevent root rot, so choose a container with drainage holes or add them yourself. Terra cotta pots are an excellent choice for herbs, as they are porous and allow air circulation. You can also use mason jars or recycled containers but make sure to add drainage holes.
Provide Adequate Water and Nutrients
Herbs need regular watering to thrive, but be careful not to overwater them. Allow the soil to dry out slightly before watering again, and be sure to water at the base of the plant to avoid wetting the leaves. Herbs also need nutrients to grow, so fertilize them regularly with a balanced fertilizer.
Harvest Regularly
Harvesting your herbs regularly will encourage new growth and keep your plants healthy. When harvesting, cut just above a set of leaves to promote branching. Use your fresh herbs in your favorite recipes or dry them for later use.
RULE OF (GREEN) THUMB
Rotate your pots when growing herbs to get an even coverage of sunlight/ artificial light. You will have a much fuller and evenly spread plant!
Creating a successful indoor herb garden takes a bit of planning and care, but it's well worth the effort. With time and attention, you can enjoy fresh herbs year-round and add flavor to your favorite dishes. What's not to love?
